On average, women suffer from higher rates of depression than men. The unique hormonal changes we experience, like in menstruation, pregnancy and postpartum, and menopause, can contribute to this vulnerability. More external factors, like chronic stress, major life transitions, and losses, can also precipitate depression.
Sometimes it is not so obvious that we are depressed, like when we experience emotions other than sadness and hopelessness. Depression can make us feel emotionally numb and less interested in doing things we normally enjoy. Depression can throw off appetite, sleep, energy level, and concentration. It can interfere with our ability to concentrate and make decisions and, in the most serious of cases, make it feel like life is not worth living.
Depression can also impact our mood by making us feel like we are in a chronic state of irritability and prone to temper outbursts or “tantrums.” It can be a part of bipolar disorder too, experienced as “the lows” that alternate with “the highs” of mania/hypomania.
